External consultants are a necessity – they have expertise that you need unless you happen to be in the ERP implementation business.  But at some point, they will leave.  If they leave before you are self-sufficient, you will have an enduring capability gap.  Self-sufficiency requires a team that is verifiably capable after the consultants move on.
